For LaShonda, a single mother in Brunswick County, becoming a homeowner once felt like a distant dream — something possible, but hard to reach alone. Between work and caring for her young son, navigating the home-buying process seemed overwhelming.
“Habitat has given me the opportunity to meet a goal of being a homeowner,” she shared. “While I knew it was doable, Habitat gave me education, support, and played the middleman in so many ways. They did a lot of the legwork so that I didn’t have to.”
Through Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity, she found more than a path to homeownership — she found a community that believed in her and her family. Habitat offered guidance, encouragement, and hands-on help that made all the difference for a determined mom building a better future.

“I am able to offer my son security in a peaceful and safe neighborhood. I’m able to give him the freedom to run around freely,” she said with a smile. Now, every time they pull into their driveway, her son’s face lights up. “My son smiles every time we pull into our driveway — and that’s enough to be proud of.”
For this single mother, the keys to her new home represent more than stability — they symbolize hope, independence, and the power of community. Her journey is proof that with faith, hard work, and a little help from Habitat, dreams really can be built from the ground up.
